SMSC - Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development.

We firmly believe that education goes beyond that of the National Curriculum - we aim to develop our children and prepare them to be true citizens of the world. One way we do this is through our SMSC and Modern British Values provision. This ranges from teaching in RE, PSHRE and citizenship through to a wide range of extra-curricular activities. These crucial elements are present across our entire curriculum. 

Spiritual Development

Our pupils will be taught to:

Explore beliefs and experience; respect faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity; reflect.

Moral Development

Our pupils will be taught to:

Recognise right and wrong; respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views.

Social Development

Our pupils will be taught to:

Investigate and moral issues; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the fundamental values of British democracy.

Cultural Development

Our pupils will be taught to:

Appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain's parliamentary system; participate in cultural opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.

Modern British Values

We aim to:

• Enable our pupils to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
• Help them to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England
• Encourage our pupils to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely
• Enable them to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England
• Further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling our pupils to acquire an appreciation for and respect for their own and other cultures
• Encourage respect for other people
• Encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England
• Encourage respect for other people, paying particular regard to the protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010
• Recognise the great privilege of independence and liberty which we have, but also understand the boundaries in which such individual liberty must be maintained
